The proposed replacement hospital and expansion at San Rafael Medical Campus is extremely challenging due to the existing site constraints. They include hilly site, phasing requirements, lack of staging area, shortage of parking spaces, wayfinding issues, extreme low floor-to-floor height, and highly sensitive neighborhood with adjacent elementary school, and three home owner associations.
The proposed master plan resolves and enhances the entire campus wayfinding system by introducing a new central courtyard between the existing and proposed hospital. The courtyard acts as the magnet unifying all components of the medical campus. Using the similar strategy but in a more intimate scale, healing rooftop gardens are created between bed towers to form the finger-like organization which will provide approximately 150 beds.
